DK Pattern graph

This is the Lace & Garter DK7 graph, col.usage
explained on capture.

May be used for Most Brother Electronics =
930, 940 ,950i & 965i.

Not for Mylarsheets!

A word of warning; please be very sure that at NO time
you have both carriages engaged in the belt!!!

Last pattern converted

Have finished the DK file for this pattern so it can be knitted using the Lace &
Garter carriages
only.
Fairly slow going, but foolproof patterning.

Same pattern-2 rows of knitting

This pattern was used in the Original Garment.
(The swatch has not been steamed or pressed).
There are 2 rows of knitting inbetween transfers,
the rest is the same.

One can also use this pattern purely on the mainbed
if one wants to reform the 2 rib sts. inbetween the
3 sts. used for lace transfers.
The transfers are easier to see.

I just used a memohelper to enable easier following
of left-right or right to left transfers.

Another possibility for mainbed knitting is to use
the lace carriage & the garter
carriage, but then the purl sts. & the lace
need to be programmed for the appropriate
needle selections.

2 more Photos of the KM Setup

The easiest way for me to remember which stitches need to be transferred
is to use the carriage either from Left to Right or from Right to Left.
The Mainbed needle group of 3,the needle nearest the carriage needs
to have that needle transferred to the centre needle (of3) than "both" loops
or stitches get transferred back to the originally transferred needle,
putting the now empty centre needle back into working position.

Options for knitting MK Magazines's Patterns

This is the 3x2 needle set for both beds.
Outside needles are used on the ribber,2 either side for seaming,
or 5-6 on side which incorporates Front Bands, either left or right.

A query came up from a Knitter friend on this subject.

For some patterns published in Magazines there are several ways of
tackling the job.
One can follow the instructions word for word or in many cases one can
reproduce the same result in different ways, be it because one hasn't got
the same brand of machine, a different gauge, a very different type of yarn
or a body which requires changes of all kinds, be that length or width.

The garment can still resemble the original or actually look the same,
allbeit with a better fit or more appropriate for the wearer.

This particular garment is a very pretty handmanipulated rib lace
in part & plain knitting in another
from Machine knitting Monthly July 2008 (a magazine which most of us buy).

I'n the next few days I will try to knit it the way I prefer.

Slightly enlarged pattern for finer yarn

Turns out better in a silkier yarn which doesn't need steaming.
I should take a Photo instead of using the scanner in order to see the actual bubbly affect!

This enlarged version looks better when using fine yarn on a 4.5 gauge machine.

A converted lace freebie

This is a converted freebie from handknitting to Brother machineknitting.
Original handknit comes from Ivana Miachalova's (Chech Republic) Bloglink
to her free patterns.

My handknit effort looks actually better than the machineknit version,
mainly because of the heavier yarn used.

Reverse direction Feather & Fan-Machine Knit

Finally managed to trick Design-a-Knit's Lace Tool to do my bidding.
It took quite a bit of manipulating & downloading, uploading, deleting rows etc.
before it would knit this as I wanted it to.

i.e. all transfers done in one row, followed by 2 rows of knitting.
26 rows of transfers for each 2 rows of knitting.

Used a large tension for the lace so the holes would be easily seen.

The Handknit is the one with the stripes.

Webshots Slideshows

All Webshots Slideshows are listed in the left Panel of the Blog
under "My Photos".
I tried to embedd them on the main part of the Blog; it made the
Slide too small for good visibility.

Another Lace conversion-not quite successfull so far

This one does go from centre to the sides, but in staggered rows.

I can get it exactly right by handtransferring on the machine, but that's too much fiddling around,
so off we go again, until a lightbulb lights up & I get it exactly the same as the handknit
(automatically selected by KM) even if it means knitting only ONE row between transfers.


This is the first variation DK7's Lace Tool refuses to accept all decreases in rows 1&2!

Had a try at converting this handknit. Stripes in green only for accentuating.
All the decreases lean to the side from the first stitch in centre, which remains
knitted only throughout pattern.
A slightly different type of 6 hole Feather&Fan.
Generally the F&F moves towards the centre where it decreases by 2 sts.........

I did originally write to the Lady re "Her Kureopatora" scarf & she reluctantly gave me
her permission to convert it to MK-ing.
I also mentioned her name in relation to my scarves.

I then handknitted her version & realized that it wasn't possible to do the same thing on the machine!

That brought me to a search of alternatives;
there are 4 examples (all slightly different as they use shortrowing) in
Susanna Lewis' at least 20 year old book on pages 100 & 101.
But all similar in a way to a Snakescarf!

I did not use any of these or Kim Salazaar's methods for my machineknit scarves!

I have not given any How-To Instructions on how my scarves were actually knitted,
thus far anyway.........
I NEVER copy anyone's knitting techniques, but have always found my own way
of getting the results I want.
I certainly don't sell anything, simply enjoy solving knitting puzzles.

Whilst on the subject of Release sts. a week ago I should have added the easiest of all KMs do knit these on: the Passap!

Rectified Tulip pattern

This is how it should look, plus another sample which has a light weaving effect at the top.

A few handknit to machine knit conversions are following.

I noticed a mistake after uploading this Photo,
ther is only 1 st. in the centre of the pattern in the first unit & 2 sts. in the next one.

I've renamed the machineknit version: Tulip Lace;
I think it's rather pretty.

Brother Main bed Shadow or relief Lace

The last Mainbed Brother Shadow or Relief Lace, as an example of what is possible;
Floral patterns looking like garter, but being very flat instead of pulling together.
All purl sts. knitted full width on Ribber bed.



Needles selected on Main Bed , at end of pattern transfer to ribber.
Hidden pattern Brother 940-884-double height & width.


Much faster to knit using a Passap KM & U100 transfer carriage.


This has very many possibilities, including shifting of whole areas of selected needles
by manual transfer on top of selected needles, doubling up the plain sts.
by slipping (using F-separation in DK),
manual cabling of selected needles & plating fo heavier effects.

Superba S48 Jacquard variations

It's quite easy to do 6 row pintucks whilst knitting jacquard on the S48, this was a test only.

Commercial rib setting 2x2 continued through the jacquard.
An old swatch only, had to use 2 ends of same yarn for welt in the garment.
This type of jacquard is more flexible than the normal type, unless one uses a tuck setting.
Just bear in mind not to use the doubleyarn holder when knitting the welts,
or you won't gwt the normal stretch!

These are only 3 of a great many possibilities for knitting Jacquards on the Superba Machines

Brother Release St. variation

This swatch is slightly different to the "circles" one, in that all the
Main Bed Selected stitches are dropped in one swoop at the
end of the knitting (as in Passap Drop stitch), but before casting off.

Save a lot of hassles & transferring stitches from main bed to ribber.

In answer to Alisons' question;
You start the caston as for Fullneedle rib,
hang comb & weights, then transfer all Main Bed stitches to ribber
before starting patterning.

The only difference between this pattern & the 'circles'
pattern is that the latter requires dropping sts. as each decrease
of the circles occurs !
Releasing sts. is patterndependent.

Brother Stitchworld patt. 104

This the only Inbuilt pattern in the Stitchworld book & 930-940 KMS,
where the lace is done with 2 empty needles next to oneanother.
Cannot find it in the 970 SW Book.

Doublehelix spiral

Started a new conversion project last week handknitting a
doublehelix Spiral Scarf & will hopefully succeed in replicating the same
on Brother 4.5 & 9.0 Bulky
And hope to do the same on a Passap Pinky.
