One year of lost time.

It's been almost a year since I posted anything on my Blog.

A couple of heartattacks contributed to the lack of updating,
a few stays in hospital and trying to recover (not very successfully)
all contributed to not being able to catch up with my hobbies.

From now on I won't be making any promises which I cannot keep, instead
when I am able to I will put things up.
The rest will have to wait.

Problem fixed!

This is a swatch reformed from the Susanna Lewis book (original punchcard design page 223) to an automatic electronic pattern which increases &and decreases the side automatically.
I've gone through the process 3 times
and haven't found out why there is a
fault in the side edging after a full repeat (on the other- plain side)
Maybe I need to get away from it for a while to get a better perspective
on the problem.
Just looking just now at the first row
I think I can spot an irregularity in theDesign.

8hole Feather & Fan and Variations-conversions to KMs

The graph for the handmanipulated (doublebed) F+F below
is the same as the Brother Swatches in the Slideshow of the same name.
I would like to make it clear that all the patterns were converted
from handknitting in both "DK7's Lace Tool and the Brother
lace cartridge " for doublechecking.
Downloaded to the PPD then uploaded back separated to DK7's (LaceTool) where
the gartercarriage rows were added to the graphs and the .pat files
including "Input" for background-0 lace-1 knit rows-2
and garter-3 saved, so that the Brother KM has all the necessary
info in it's window as one knits along.
Not forgetting that the Garter Carriage does NOT preselect!

This proves that all FF laces no matter how many holes they contain.
Fern=4, Feather and Fan=6, Peacock=8 or multiple hole as in the red or yellow samples of wave laces can all be done in either
DK7's Lace Tool or Brother Lace Cartridge.
Most handtooled laces can thus be converted.

Easy Handmanipulated Lace on Doublebed Machines

The idea came from this old Missoni original!

It's up to the knitter whether they want to Transfer all sts. to
Backbed, straight after having done the handmanipulations
or knit one row first on the front bed and then use the garter carriage U100 -transfer to back bed and knit 5or 6 rows ?
When done, use the transfer carriage again to move all sts. to the
Front bed and repeat the process as often as you like, changing
colours as often as you wish !

It's a faster process than using a Brother KM(lace C) & it's Garter carriage for the actual knitting.
Admittedly it's worryfree and can be preprogrammed, but waiting

for the GC (turtle) to finish knitting or purling, before changing yarns
can be a pain.........

This is a special for Passap or Superba machines using
either an U 80 or U-100
Or for the Superba, the special garter carriage.

For transferring all sts, from Front to Back beds then reverse

Automatic Lace Edging (Brother)

An older automatic edging which is a bit quirky in that

it doesn't behave the same way on different machines.

One of the last Brother Laces.

Still working on it as I feel the

outside edge is not wide enough!Guess this will have to wait until I really need an automatic edging.

Finally managed to do the pattern
for the Empisal Leaf edging
so they both face in either direction.
Sorry I forgot to add that all these edgings were done fully automatically by the Lace carriage
and the knitcarriage.
All the information for the increases
and decreases are contained in the
.pat file!

If there were any handtransfers,manual increases or decreases used,
then I would NOT consider these edgings 'automatic'!

Same Lace pattern different results

A difficult handknit conversion-12 hole wave!

Yellow MKed , no purl rows inserted, as it was purely a test from the handknit red swatch,if you look closely you will notice that there are 4 sts.
reduced onto ONE needle
in the centre.
Pretty but somewhat difficult to knit on the machine.

Main Bed & Ribber.

Pattern 403 another Threadlace pattern done on Doublebed,

both are useful for yarns which

are not exactly smooth.

Some other patterns lend themselves to the same

type of knitting, but can result in different textures

when the second yarn is a woolly Nylon,the knitting

appears raised,as in embossing!

Lace Offsets or not

To offset or not?
Some Lace Patterns lend themselves very well to Offsetting and improve
when thus handled, yet amazingly some offsetting becomes detrimental to the general look and appeal of the changes.

The Webshot Slideshow of changed patterns from the Stitchworld 940
book is a good example of patterns which have benefitted by being
offset, yet the reverse can be said for other patterns.

Showing are 2 examples of a handlace-converted pattern, which I
did in both versions.
The comparisons speak for themselves!

Lace & Fairisle design emphasis

the floats used here are tiny as one can see!

I had to change both graphs to suit my way of knitting them.

They both look very pretty; but not to my liking the very long floats!

An Operator Error turns out as a new Technique?

This is the result of not having one's mind on what one is doing!
Instead of pressing in the Fairisle button I managed to press both
buttons as for Threadlace.

Actually I rather like the result.

More Brother Lace & Fairisle combinations

4th row of Lace knitting will select 1st row of Fairisle needles, PARK LC at left-off bed!
engage MB carriage on rightt side KC II knit 2 rows, PARK on right side.

Make sure the carriage is parked on the right rails, then start at left with Lace carriage.........
At NO time should both carriages be on the bed simultaneously!

Finally feel just a bit better (at least I am able to sit for a while
with the help of painkillers)

So have tried to make a couple more pat files & knit the swatches.

Just to show how one can use a Pattern from the Stitchworld book (930-940)
& add the Fairisle component to it.
I personally prefer these type of small patterns as they lend themselves
better for this type of combinations (if one looks at the back one can see
the small floats of col.2).

Ideas which work & some that don't!

On the previous theme of Lace & Fairisle;
I did convert another Lace Handknit to MK-ing,
but this pattern really does not lend itself to what
I wanted to achieve.
In order to make it look reasonable the floats would
have been too long (my pet hate).

So this one gets shelved & I'd rather use it as it is
or "offset" photo at side---------------->

Or maybe it's just me, not thinking clearly at the moment
due to a bad Flu.

Fairisle & Lace Combo

Fiddling around on the Brother 940 as usual, thought I
would try my hand at a combination Lace & Fairisle;
it's been a few years since I've indulged in this type of Lace.

The small pattern file was one converted from a
handknit graph not so long ago,
was curious how it would look if I inserted some Fairisle.

Brother Pintucks-a question answered

The overlapp can be made more pronounced by knitting a couple of extra rows on the main bed.

A friend's question hopefully answered.

A slightly overlapping Pintuck is required,
I have done somethig similar a few years ago
on a golfshirt collar, but this did not overlapp,
just stopped the collar ends from
curling under.

Fern Lace 12stitchx12rows

Just for fun, a comparison of 2 old Fern-lace patterns
& the different ways they can be programmed &still achieve the same result
the swatch shows them knitted in one piece.
These patts. can be used as an overall design or just 3-4 repeats for an
horizontal edging.
There are sooo many various scalloped edgings around, from the small ones to
very large ones.

Remember that for Mylars or punchcards, the patt.graphs need to be flipped horizontally.

Brother Jacquard Separation Possibilities

Knitjac separation for accurate representation of pattern=knits as B-default!
F-separation on right leaves every other row out!

This is also the way a PPD Multicol. cartridge will save a pixel per pixel Stitchpattern;
it downloads to the machine as doublelength A-separation=see right graph below.

This elongated graph can be knitted as A or B-sep. jacquard.

C-separation -below------ A-separation or dbl-length

This is the setup + 2xLength on KM, above is the separation.

When DK shows that many errors, I will rather use Knitjac separations or C-separation for a more textured
fabric, by using plain knit on ribber & a Combination of Sliptuck or tuckslip on the Main Bed.

The main separations I use for my Brother Jacquards are B
Snadwich or default separation.
C-separation (singlerow separation) which starts at the other
end of the bed for preselection of needles & requires the
use of the elongation button on the machine.
A-separation, which must be basically a doublelength pattern-
as in capture of -2cjq-dbllength-jpg file.
And F-separation which is an every other row separation method.

Captures of the separated graphs follow on top.

Mostly I use the KnitJac separations (a small program)
written by a spanish engineer for his machineknitting wife;
it's a combination of changing colsequences & elimination
or insertion of extra rows to enable faultless representation
of a pattern as in an original patternpicture.

2 jacquard variations(Brother)

This is a KNIT-jac separation uploaded back to DK7 & saved as Fairisle.

Both of these patts. require a different type of separation
to the normal Brother Default.

Even DK could not cope (showed too many errors)
in the landscape pic.

And in the 2x8 patt., the cols. came out wrong.
I have a small program "Knitjac" which does an
irregular type of separation that works & that
has saved me having to do a manual separation,
somewhat like the picture puzzles I used to play with
as a child!

Brother 965 3col.default Roses

The 3 cols. Roses Patt. is a favourite of mine, I haven't got a 965
so had to copy all the pages from the black&white graph from
the 965 Stitchworld Book II.

Pattern 851 consists of 90 sts.x390 rows in separated rows!
Can you imagine the time it took to draw all of that dot by
dot into Designaknit, then colouring in all the rows
according to the numbers alongside the graph?

That was many years ago; wouldn't have the patience now.
At several points in the pattern the col.sequences changed
so there is no distortion in the pattern.

If one looks carefully, there are a few of these type of
separated patterns in this particular book where the
col.sequences are not in order
of 1,2,3 or 1,2,3,4. for the same reason.

All of these are done in what is generally a Brother default
separation referred to in Design-a-Knit as B-separation
or otherwise also known as Sandwich-separation,
because they start with 1 row of Base col.,
followed by rows 1&2 of first contrast, rows 1&2 of second
contrast,(in a 3col.patt.) finished 3 row sequence is row
2 of Background col.

Next sequence follows in the same order!
Check the Picture (click on it for a larger view).

So the contrast cols. are "sandwiched" between the
Background colour!

These mistakes can happen very easily if one doesn't pay attention whilst knitting Jacquards.
The knitted piece could still be used if one doesn't mind the changed original pattern.

Actually this is faster to knit than using a Brother Garter carriage,
Looks pretty in a shiny yarn.

These are 2 ways of knitting 2 col. garter on any doublebed Passap.
I used a Pinky & the U80 for the transferring of stitches.

At top-another version of the same -on Passap Duo80 & U100.

Of course one could argue that these are not true garters,
which in effect they are not, singlebed knitting
is not being used.
But as long as they simulate garter on one side, I'm happy.

If someone wants to try a true garter, remember that no.1 on the U-locks
need pushers beneath selected needles to operate and transfer to "empty"
needles on other bed.

Whereas no.5 will transfer stitches only to needles which already
contain stitches.
(Hence "doublebed Garter".)

Brother 2col.Garter Examples

There are several examples of how these can look,
in light or heavy yarns or a combination of the 2.

Another possibility is available just in case there is a malfunction
of the GC & it will only turn ONE way as per the acqua-brown& white sample.
The result is smowhat flecked , but it can still be used &
it has more texture than the normal 2 col.garter which has the yarnbobbin turning both ways.

(The swatch has not been steamed or pressed).
There are 2 rows of knitting inbetween transfers,
the rest is the same.

One can also use this pattern purely on the mainbed
if one wants to reform the 2 rib sts. inbetween the
3 sts. used for lace transfers.
The transfers are easier to see.

I just used a memohelper to enable easier following
of left-right or right to left transfers.

Another possibility for mainbed knitting is to use
the lace carriage & the garter
carriage, but then the purl sts. & the lace
need to be programmed for the appropriate
needle selections.

The easiest way for me to remember which stitches need to be transferred
is to use the carriage either from Left to Right or from Right to Left.
The Mainbed needle group of 3,the needle nearest the carriage needs
to have that needle transferred to the centre needle (of3) than "both" loops
or stitches get transferred back to the originally transferred needle,
putting the now empty centre needle back into working position.

Options for knitting MK Magazines's Patterns

This is the 3x2 needle set for both beds.
Outside needles are used on the ribber,2 either side for seaming,
or 5-6 on side which incorporates Front Bands, either left or right.

A query came up from a Knitter friend on this subject.

For some patterns published in Magazines there are several ways of
tackling the job.
One can follow the instructions word for word or in many cases one can
reproduce the same result in different ways, be it because one hasn't got
the same brand of machine, a different gauge, a very different type of yarn
or a body which requires changes of all kinds, be that length or width.

The garment can still resemble the original or actually look the same,
allbeit with a better fit or more appropriate for the wearer.

This particular garment is a very pretty handmanipulated rib lace
in part & plain knitting in another
from Machine knitting Monthly July 2008 (a magazine which most of us buy).

I'n the next few days I will try to knit it the way I prefer.

Finally managed to trick Design-a-Knit's Lace Tool to do my bidding.
It took quite a bit of manipulating & downloading, uploading, deleting rows etc.
before it would knit this as I wanted it to.

i.e. all transfers done in one row, followed by 2 rows of knitting.
26 rows of transfers for each 2 rows of knitting.

Used a large tension for the lace so the holes would be easily seen.

The Handknit is the one with the stripes.

Another Lace conversion-not quite successfull so far

This one does go from centre to the sides, but in staggered rows.

I can get it exactly right by handtransferring on the machine, but that's too much fiddling around,
so off we go again, until a lightbulb lights up & I get it exactly the same as the handknit
(automatically selected by KM) even if it means knitting only ONE row between transfers.

This is the first variation DK7's Lace Tool refuses to accept all decreases in rows 1&2!

Had a try at converting this handknit. Stripes in green only for accentuating.
All the decreases lean to the side from the first stitch in centre, which remains
knitted only throughout pattern.
A slightly different type of 6 hole Feather&Fan.
Generally the F&F moves towards the centre where it decreases by 2 sts.........

I did originally write to the Lady re "Her Kureopatora" scarf & she reluctantly gave me
her permission to convert it to MK-ing.
I also mentioned her name in relation to my scarves.

I then handknitted her version & realized that it wasn't possible to do the same thing on the machine!

That brought me to a search of alternatives;
there are 4 examples (all slightly different as they use shortrowing) in
Susanna Lewis' at least 20 year old book on pages 100 & 101.
But all similar in a way to a Snakescarf!

I did not use any of these or Kim Salazaar's methods for my machineknit scarves!

I have not given any How-To Instructions on how my scarves were actually knitted,
thus far anyway.........
I NEVER copy anyone's knitting techniques, but have always found my own way
of getting the results I want.
I certainly don't sell anything, simply enjoy solving knitting puzzles.

It's quite easy to do 6 row pintucks whilst knitting jacquard on the S48, this was a test only.

Commercial rib setting 2x2 continued through the jacquard.
An old swatch only, had to use 2 ends of same yarn for welt in the garment.
This type of jacquard is more flexible than the normal type, unless one uses a tuck setting.
Just bear in mind not to use the doubleyarn holder when knitting the welts,
or you won't gwt the normal stretch!

Brother Release St. variation

This swatch is slightly different to the "circles" one, in that all the
Main Bed Selected stitches are dropped in one swoop at the
end of the knitting (as in Passap Drop stitch), but before casting off.

Save a lot of hassles & transferring stitches from main bed to ribber.

In answer to Alisons' question;
You start the caston as for Fullneedle rib,
hang comb & weights, then transfer all Main Bed stitches to ribber
before starting patterning.

The only difference between this pattern & the 'circles'
pattern is that the latter requires dropping sts. as each decrease
of the circles occurs !
Releasing sts. is patterndependent.

where the lace is done with 2 empty needles next to oneanother.
Cannot find it in the 970 SW Book.

Past 3 weeks

I have been working on a Snakescarf conversion from
handknitting to Machineknittig.

I found the original handknit on a blog belonging to "wiseneedle" owner Kim Salazar;
the whole design concept had to be changed for machineknitting.
For starters the knitting had to commence upside down & done in parts as
against all in one in handknitting.

Anyway it's done & have made 4 different snakescarves using various types of yarn
so there's something there for all tastes & preferences.
